Locations

The Puget Sound Field Office is an extension of the organization’s Northwest Region, based in Santa Rosa, California. First of its kind, this office is in addition to the other six regional training centers and supports local clients and volunteers while continuing to place more expertly trained service dogs with people with disabilities in the Puget Sound area, at no cost to them.

Unique to the Puget Sound Field Office, dogs in professional training will be fostered by volunteers, giving them a safe home, love and exercise, and transporting them to and from the facility for training each day during the week.

Currently, Canine Companions serves 55 service and facility dog teams in the Puget Sound, and more than 80 teams in the state of Washington. The organization is supported by more than 30 volunteer puppy raisers in the Puget Sound, and additional volunteers in other roles, including events and fundraising.

Get Involved – Volunteer!

Canine Companions is looking for more volunteer puppy raisers and fosters for dogs in professional training!

Take part in the special moments while our clients get matched with their service dog, and volunteer at our team trainings and graduation ceremonies serving and cleaning up lunches.

Foster Opportunities

Volunteer fosters play a pivotal role in a Canine Companions service dog’s journey, by opening their hearts and their homes to the dogs in professional training at our Puget Sound Field Office. Volunteer fosters allow the dogs to be expertly training by our instructors, while housing and caring for the dogs during the evenings and weekends.

Fosters drop off and pick up dogs in training on weekdays at Canine Companions at 2454 Occidental Ave 3B, Seattle. Ask us about our Service Dog Shuttle helping to pick up and drop off foster dogs.

There is also an opportunity to be a Layover Puppy Foster, where you will pick up 8-10 week old puppies at the airport and care for them from a few hours to 3 days before they continue on to their puppy raisers, scheduled by volunteer leadership.

Locations

Canine Companions graduation ceremonies occur at least four times a year in the North Central region. Graduation marks the end of a rigorous two-week Team Training program where Canine Companions’ highly-trained service dogs are partnered with a child or adult with a disability or a person who will use the dog to help people with disabilities, working together as a team. During the graduation ceremony, the volunteer puppy raisers of graduating dogs “pass the leash” to the new graduates, marking the official start of a long and valuable partnership and symbolizing the dog’s transition from dog-in-training to service dog.

To fulfill this requirement we encourage you to work on an independent community service project such as:

  • Organize a small fundraising event such as a bake sale, car wash, lemonade stand, etc. and donate the funds to Canine Companions.
  • Create a DogFest Walk ‘n Roll team and raise funds for your local DogFest event. Visit canine.org/dogfest for more information.
  • Become an expert! Learn about Canine Companions and help to spread the word to local schools, service organizations, and other community groups.
  • Be creative!!

Please contact the volunteer coordinator to have your project approved prior to starting. Be sure to document the time you spend working on your project. When the project is completed, contact the volunteer coordinator to make an appointment and at that time you will receive a sign off on your completed hours.
